Q

Describe the 4 stages of sleep
How does each link to EEG?
(*stage 1-3 can be referred to as N1,2,3)

A

Stage 1- transition between wakefulness and sleep -‘falling asleep sensation’. EEG shows that theta waves, slow frequency, but high amplitude in comparison
Stage 2- harder to wake up, body temp and heart rate drops. EEG shows slow theta
Stage 3- deepest sleep, difficult to awake, body is most relaxed. Identified on EEG by the presence of slow frequency and large amplitude Delta waves
Stage 4- REM: dreams occur, similar to wakefulness as seen on EEG, but body is paralysed

Q

What did Haider do?
What did Haider suggest?

A

EEG of 10 patients recovering from drug overdose showed increased REM sleep
REM is for mental recovery

Q

2 strengths of ultradian rhythms

A

Technology and devices based on understanding sleep stages have been developed -these track and help individuals improve sleep>happier, healthier, ^ in economically productive population
Development of sophisticated EEGs is improving our understanding of the sleep cycle

Q

1 weaknesses of ultradian rhythms

A

Stages of sleep are not a simple process, adapts to the developmental needs of the individual -newborn babies spend 80% of sleep in REM, compared to 20-25% for adults
