key terms Flashcards
What is a gland?
Organ in the body that synthesises substances e.g. hormones
What is a hormone?
How are they produced?
How strong is its effects?
Chemical substances that circulate in the bloodstream and only affect target organs.
They’re produced in large quantities, but disappear quickly
They’re effects are powerful
What is the fight or flight response?
What happens to the body?
The way an animal responds when stressed.
The body becomes psychologically aroused in readiness to fight an aggressor or flee.
What is adrenaline?
What effect does it have on cells?
Hormone produced by the arsenal glands which is part of the human body’s immediate stress response system.
Has a strong effect on the cells of cardiovascular system, stimulating the heart rate
What is a neuron?
Basic building blocks of the nervous system
Nerve cells that process and transmit messages through electrical and chemical signals
What are sensory neurons?
Describe its dendrites and axons
Carry messages from the PNS to the CNS
Long dendrites and short axons
What are relay neurons?
Describe its dendrites and axons
Connect the sensory neurons to the motor or other relay neurons
Short dendrites and short axons
What are motor neurons?
Describe its dendrites and axons
Connect the CNS to effectors e.g. muscles and glands
Short dendrites and long axons
