divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
What is the nervous systems two subcategories?
-Central nervous system
-Peripheral nervous system
What is the central nervous system’s (CNS) function?
Complex processing.
What is the CNS’s two subcategories?
What are their roles?
-Brain: all conscious and most unconcscious processing
-Spinal cord: receives and transmits info, some reflex processing
What is the peripheral nervous system’s (PNS) function? E.g?
-Body wide network of messenger neurons
E.g Sensory neurons to CNS, motor neurons away from the CNS
What is the peripheral nervous system’s subcategories?
What are their functions? (2)
-Somatic nervous system (SNS): controls skeletal muscles, voluntary system.
-Autonomic nervous system (ANS): controls actions of internal organs and glands, involuntary system.
What are the autonomic nervous system’s subcategories?
-Sympathetic
-Parasympathetic
What is the role of the sympathetic?
What does it release?
What does it activate?
-Increases bodily activities e.g. increase is heart rate, sweat, breathing rate, dilated pupils
-Releases noradrenaline
-Activates stress response in fight or flight
What is the role of parasympathetic?
What does it release?
What does it activate?
-Decreases bodily activities e.g decrease in heart rate, sweat, breathing rate, constricts pupils
-Release of acetylcholine
-Activates in rest in rest and digest
What is maintaining homeostasis? (2)
-Regulation of the internal environment
-In normal conditions there is a balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
