  • may see decreased BP and increased lactate

  • body attempts to compensate for perfusion decrease
  • tachycardia
  • vasoconstriction

A
  • compensatory mechanisms fail
  • mean arterial pressure (MAP) is below 65
  • inflammatory response
  • fluid issues due to increased capillary permeability
  • clotting abnormalities

  • occurs due to failure of body to respond to prior treatment
  • patient unlikely to survive due to imminent organ failure
