Stages of shock Flashcards
1
Q
What are the four stages of shock?
A
initial, compensatory, progressive, irreversible
2
Q
Describe features of initial stage of shock?
A
- few clinical signs
- no signs of decreased perfusion
- may see decreased BP and increased lactate
3
Q
Describe features of compensatory stage of shock?
A
- body attempts to compensate for perfusion decrease
- tachycardia
- vasoconstriction
4
Q
Describe features of progressive stage of shock?
A
- compensatory mechanisms fail
- mean arterial pressure (MAP) is below 65
- inflammatory response
- fluid issues due to increased capillary permeability
- clotting abnormalities
5
Q
Describe features of irreversible stage of shock?
A
- occurs due to failure of body to respond to prior treatment
- patient unlikely to survive due to imminent organ failure
