Stages of Motor Development Manipulative Flashcards
Initial Underhand Rolling
straddle stance, ball held w/ hands on side (palms facing each other), acute bend at the sides, backwards pendulum motion, eyes monitor the ball, forward swing and trunk lift to release ball
Elementary Underhand Rolling
stride stance, larger ball held w/ 1 hand on top and bottom (smaller ball w/ 1 hand), backward arm swing w/out weight transfer to rear, limited knee bend, forward swing w/ limited follow through, ball released between knee and waist level eyes alternate monitoring target and ball
Mature Underhand Rolling
contralateral step, ball in hand corresponding to trailing leg, slight hip rotation and trunk lean forward, pronounced knee bend, forward swing w/ weight transferred from back to front foot, release at knee level or below, eyes on target throughout
Initial Underhand throwing
stationary stance, ball is held w/ hands on side, palms facing each other, limited swing backward, eyes monitor the ball, forward swing and trunk lift to release ball
Elementary Underhand Throwing
Ipsilateral step on stride stance, ball is held w/ 1 hand, backward swing w/out weight transfer to rear, forward swing w/ limited follow through, ball released between knee and waist level or above chest level, eyes alternate target and waist level
Mature Underhand Throwing
Contralateral step, ball is held in hand corresponding to trail leg, forward swing w/ weight transfer from back to front foot, release at waist level, follow through, eyes on target throughout
Initial Overhand Throwing
ball is thrown in a chop like motion, arm bend at elbow for a vertical windup, feet are stationary during throw, no spinal or hip rotation
Elementary 2 Overhand throwing
ball is thrown in a slingshot motion, windup is horizontal, block rotation as spine rotates away from the line of flight, arms follow through across body
Elementary 3 Overhand Throwing
throws and steps using same side arm and leg, high windup, feet cross during the step forward, little spinal rotation, follow through across body
Elementary 4 Overhand Throwing
throw and step w/ opposite arm and leg, high windup, little spinal rotation, follow through across body
Mature Overhand Throwing
Throw and steps w/ opposite arm and leg, downward arc on the windup, body rotation is segmented, arm and leg follow through
Initial Striking
Chop strike, feet stationary, no trunk rotation, elbows fully flexed force comes from extension of flexed joints in a downward plane
Elementary 2 Striking
Horizontal push or swing, feet are stationary or maybe a step, weight shift to front foot before striking, combined trunk and hip rotation (block rotation)
Elementary 3 Striking
ipsilateral step, back foot steps across, diagonal downward swing, strike in oblique plane
Mature Striking
contralateral step, segmented body rotation, wrist rollover, on follows through, weight shift to back foot as implement moves backwards, striking in a long full arc in horizontal plane, weight shifts to front foot on contact
Initial Kicking
Stationary push w/ little no leg wind up, stationary position, foot pushes ball, steps backwards after kick
Elementary 2 Kicking
stationary leg wing, leg windup to rear, stationary position, opposition of arms and legs
Elementary 3 Kicking
Moving approach, foot travels in low arc, arms/legs in opposition, forward or sideward step on follow through
Mature Kicking
leap-kick-hop, rapid approach, backward trunk lean during windup, leap before kick, hop after
Initial Dribbling
Ball is held w/ both hands, hands placed onside of ball palms facing each other, downward trust w/ both arms, ball contacts surface close to body, may contact foot, great variation in height of bounce, repeated ball catch pattern
Elementary 2 Dribbling
ball held w/ both hands, one on top other near bottom, slight forward lean, downward trust, force inconsistent, watches ball, palm hits ball, limited control of ball
Mature Dribbling
feet in narrow stance, opposite foot forward, slight forward trunk lean ball waist high, ball pushed, fingers used, visual monitoring unnecessary, controlled dribbling
Initial Catching
delayed arm reaction, arms are straight forward until ball contacts arms, scooping action to chest, feet are stationary
Elementary 2 Catching
arms encircle the ball as it approaches, ball is hugged to chest, feet are stationary or may take one step
Elementary 3 Catching
arms scoop under the ball as it approaches, ball is trapped to chest, single step may be used to approach the ball
Elementary 4 Catching
catch is made w/ hands only, feet may be stationary or may take one step
Mature Catching
Whole body moves through space towards ball, catch is made w/ hands only
