stages of mitosis Flashcards
Prophase
The cell is preparing to divide. Chromosomes outside of nucleus have duplicated and begin moving away from another toward opposite ends of the nucleus.
Pro metaphase
the spindle fibers attach to the centromeres as the chromosomes continue to shorten and thicken. Most likely placed in nucleus.
Metaphase
the nuclear envelope is fragmented and spindle occupies the region formerly occupied by the nucleus. The chromosomes are now in the center of the spindle with two sister chromatids.
Anaphase
the centromeres uniting the sister chromatids divide. As chromosomes, they separate and move towards opposite poles of the spindle. this ensures that each cell receives a copy of each type of chromosome completing the genes.
Telophase
the chromosomes arrive at the poles. The chromosomes become indistinct chromatin again. The spindle fibers disappears as the nuclear envelope components reassembles in each cell.
