Stages of learning Flashcards
Describe a cognitive learner?
- trying to create schemas
- practices skill with trial + error
- performance will be full of errors, inconsistent and lack flow and coordination
How should a coach teach a cognitive learner?
- demonstrations are vital
- shouldn’t information overload
- guidance to focus on selective cues (selective attention)
- reinforce skill with positive feedback
- specific feedback to correct errors
Give a sporting example of a coach teaching a cognitive learner?
Coach demonstrating a serve to a beginner badminton player
performer has a mental picture, cues and practise
Describe an associative learner?
- practice stage
- learner attends to relevant cues
- errors are fewer and smaller
- big performance improvement
- motor programmes developed
- subroutines become more coordinated meaning skill becomes smoother
- learner develops ability to use internal kinaesthetic
How should a coach teach a associative learner?
- detailed verbal feedback is given
- few errors are corrected by coach
Give a sporting example of an associative learner?
Badminton player becoming more consistent with their serve and is now concentrating on height over net
performer can detect errors and make adjustments without the teachers help
Describe an autonomous learner?
- leaner can execute skill with conscious thought
- needs little external feedback
- able to on other factors
- motor programmes established established and stored in LTM
Give a sporting example of an autonomous learner?
A tennis player can focus on where to place the ball in relation to their opponent rather than grip and stance
Team players are able to focus more on tactics and strategies rather than executing the skill
