Practice Flashcards
What is whole practice and give an example?
What type of skills is this practice useful for?
teaching/ practicing a skill as a complete action
e.g practicing a golf swing as a whole
suitable for simple, continuous and high organisation skills
What are some advantages of whole practice?
- helps fluency
- saves time
- creates a mental image
- gives kinaesthetic feel
What are some disadvantages of whole practice?
- lot’s of information to process
- demotivating if no early success
- unsuitable for complex skills
What is part practice and give an example?
What type of skill is this practice useful for?
isolating a subroutine for practice often before putting the skill together again as a whole
e.g practicing a subroutine of a tennis serve
suitable for complex, closed, serial and dangerous skills
What are some advantages of whole practice?
- reduces amount of info to process
- gains confidence by learning an element separately
- good for cognitive learners
What are some disadvantages of whole practice?
- time consuming
- can limit kinaesthetic awareness
What is progressive part practice and give an example?
What type of skill is this practice used for?
where subroutines are isolated for specific practice before gradually linking component back together
e.g triple jump
suitable for low organisation and serial skills
What are some advantages of progressive part practice?
- allows weaknesses to be targeted
- gives better kinaesthetic awareness
What are some disadvantages of progressive part practice?
- can be slow to progress
- can limit kinaesthesis
- can be slow or boring
What is whole part whole practice and give an example?
What type of skill is this practice used for?
teaching a whole skill before isolating part of it (often the weakest) then practicing it as a whole
e.g basketball layup
suitable for serial and low organisation skills
What are some advantages of whole part whole practice?
- weak parts of subroutine can be isolated and improved
- maintains kinaesthesis
- maintains fluency
What are some disadvantages of whole part whole practice?
- ineffective for high organisation skills
- more time consuming than whole practice
What is massed practice and give an example?
What type of skills is this practice used for?
when the learner practices continuously without rest intervals
e.g repeating a badminton rally
suitable for discrete and simple skills
What are some advantages of massed practice?
- improved fitness
- develop kinaesthesis
- learn skills quickly
What are some disadvantages of massed practice?
- fatigue
- demotivation
- requires high fitness levels
- can be boring
What is distributed practice and give an example?
What type of skills is this practice used for?
involves practice sessions with rest intervals included
e.g swimmer performing a length of the pool then resting
suitable for continuous, complex and fatiguing skills
What are some advantages of distributed practice?
- maintained motivation
- rest breaks allow opportunity for feedback/ mental rehearsal
What are some disadvantages of distributed practice?
- can be boring for experienced performers
- may take longer to learn a skill
What is fixed practice and give an example?
What type of skills is this practice suitable for?
involves a specific movement pattern being practiced repeatedly in the same environment
e.g badminton player repeatedly practicing a flick shot
suitable for closed, self paced and simple skills
What are some advantages of fixed practice?
- habitual movements can be learned effectively
- few irrelevant stimuli to interfere with skill
What are some disadvantages of fixed practice?
- can becoming boring
- if skill is performed wrong the first time it may continue to be performed wrong
What is varied practice and give an example?
What type of skill is this practice suitable for?
involves skills being practiced in a variety of different environments to develop experience
e.g variety of passing drills in football
suitable for open, complex and externally paced skills
What are some advantages of varied practice?
- developed schemas
- developed strategies for different situations
- increased decision making
What are some disadvantages of varied practice?
- need to have already grooved in motor programme in a fixed environment
- not suitable for beginners
