Stages Of HIV (Clinical Manifestations) Flashcards
Primary/ Acute
Stage 0
People who are HIV + may test negative on antibody tests
- why? Because they haven’t developed antibodies yet*
That are still infectious and can transmit HIV
Seroconversion
A.K.A Window Period
the process of 1st testing negative and then testing positive
Primary/ Acute
Stage 1
2-4 weeks from infection
Antibodies can be detected
Experience flu like symptoms and neurological complications
High Viral Load
Most infectious during this Acute Phase due to High Viral load
CD4 drops TEMPORARILY then goes back up to baseline
Why does CD4 temporarily drop before returning back to baseline in Stage 1?
They initially drop be and the body is not use to pumping out more CD4 cells
You are getting hit with the virus for the first time and the body has not had the time to respond to the # of virus in your blood.
Chronic
Stage 2
Viral load “stabilizes” after initial immune response
Viral Set Point- amount of virus in body after initial immune response subsides
First several year after becoming infected patients are typically asymptomatic
Viral Set Point
amount of virus in body after initial immune response subsides
Symptomatic Infection
stage 3
Viral Load ⬆️ CD4 ⬇️
Patients become symptomatic
- fever
- frequent night sweats
- chronic diarrhea
- sever fatigue
Thrush is Associated with this phase
How many years from HIV infection ➡️ AIDS ?
10-15 years
IF LEFT UNTREATED
