Sexual Transmission
MOST COMMON
contact with blood, semen, and/or vaginal secretions from infected person
Sexual Transmission accounts for 90% of all HIV diagnoses
These fluids contain lymphocytes that may contain HIV
Sexual activities that cause trauma or inflammation to local tissue ⬆️ risk of HIV diagnoses
Lesions that are present from other STD’s (herpes or syphilis) significantly ⬆️ risk of transmission
Contact with Infected Blood
Sharing needles and/or syringes (6% of all HIV diagnoses)
Blood Transfusion (extremely rare in U.S)
Health care exposure via needle stick or open lesion

Transmission during:
Pregnancy
Delivery
Breast feeding
Accounts for less than 1% of all HIV diagnoses
HIV not contraindicated in pregnancy but consultation and education is needed.
