Post- Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
HIV drugs after exposure to reduce chances of infection
Recommended only in EMERGENCY situations after being potentially exposed to HIV
Started within 72 hours of exposure
Once (QDAY) or Twice daily (BID)
Who should be considered for PEP?
Have sexual contact with an unknown HIV positive or high risk person
Have shared needles with an unknown HIV positive or high risk person
Victims of Sexual assault
Health care workers who have had an occupational exposure
Pre- Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
HIV prevention strategy to ⬇️ risk in adults at HIGH risk for contracting HIV
Medication used in conjunction with preventative measures
Truvada
Tenofovir and Emtricitabine combo medication
Stops HIV from replicating and establishing an infection
Tenofovir
Kidney toxicity
3 month follow ups for labs and HIV testing
Who should be considered for PrEP?
Men having sex with Men
In a relationship with an HIV + partner
Not in a Monogamous relationship with an HIV - partner
Discordant couples (one partner has HIV)
Inject illicit drugs
Women who work in prostitution
