Cognitive development
The development of mental abilities throughout the lifespan. Eg memories, language and problem solving
Maturation
A pre determined biological sequence of behaviours which occur at certain ages
Learning
Relatively permanent change in behaviour due to experience
Critical periods and example
A period of life when certain experiences must happen for normal development to proceed
Eg. Human babies receive exposure to light in the first few days of life or they will be visually impaired.
Sensitive periods and example
Periods in time which are particularly suited to learning things due to the nature of the growing brain.
Eg. Learning to speak in the first years of life.
Experience expectant learning and example
Occurs during sensitive periods and refers to experiences necessary for learning to occur
Eg learning native language by being exposed to it
Experience dependent learning and example
Learning which occurs anytime during an individual life’s as a result of experience. If they miss out on it in the critical period it does not mean it will never occur, it will just be harder
Eg. Learning to read and write
Physical development
Body changes such as puberty. Including our brain continually changing
Inborn reflexes are
A set of unlearned automatic responses to certain stimuli that babies are born with, they are heredity
Development changes across the life span and ages
Infancy 0-2 years old Childhood preschool- school aged children Adolescence 12-20 years old Early adulthood 20-40 years old Middle age 40-65 Old age 65+
Social/emotional development
The study of how people learn new emotions and how they deal with them. Social development shows how you interact with people around you
What are developmental norms
Used to indicate the average age at which individuals reach certain milestones.
Define teratogen
Any toxic substance that can cause harm to an unborn child.
