Plasticity Flashcards
What are the 5 stages of plasticity
Proliferation-(new neurons)
Migration- (move)
Circuit formation- (branch out target cells and form synapses with them)
Synaptic pruning-(get rid of anything not needed)
Myelination- (stengthen connections)
A person with wernickes aphasia may
Produce fluent speech that makes no sense
Brocas is located in the
Left frontal lobe
Is a person with spacial neglect aware
Unaware or aware but unconcerned about their condition
The operation to prevent Georges seizures was probably an operation that
Severed his corpus callosum
Which lobe is damaged with spacial neglect
Posterior parietal
What is the Broca’s area
Production of fluent and clear speech
Located front left hemisphere
What is the wernickes area
Involved in interpretation of speech
Located in temporal lobe left hemisphere only
What is Broca’s aphasia
Difficulty expressing themselves in words or sentences
Non fluent, slow and effortful fluency of speech
Ability to understand written language is unaffected
What is wernickes aphasia
Difficulty understanding written or spoken language
Very fluent speech but makes no sense
Define adaptive plasticity
The ability of the brain to change, adapt and grow throughout life
What is spatial neglect
A disorder that results in the patient completely ignoring the left side of their world
What can Aphasia be caused by
Brain damage such as a stroke
Examples of spacial neglect
Half shaven face, only drawing half a picture
Why is split brain preformed
Rare form of surgery normally for severe epilepsy
When A patient with a split brain is flashed a picture to their left visual field what are they likely to saw
Unable to verbally name the object and say they saw nothing but was able to grasp it
When a patient is wiht a split brain is shown an object on their right visual field what are they likely to say
Easily see and name it verbally
Define synaptogensis
The process of moulding or forming new synapses
Who preformed the split Brian experiment
Sperry
Brain size is about 90-95% adult size by the age of about
6 years
The last brain area to reach maturity tends to be the
Prefrontal cortex
Visual images in the right visual video are processed in the
Left occipital lobe
Brain maturation is generally complete by the end of
Early adulthood (25 years old)
Monty suffers from wernickes aphasia. As a result it is likely that he;
A) consciously aware of his inability to communicate
B) he produces speech that contains nouns and verbs only
C)his ability to read is unaffected
D) he is able to speak fluently
D
Mary has Broca’s aphasia. Likely symptoms are that she
Can understand what is said to her but has difficulty pronouncing words in response
What is developmental plasticity
The ability of synapses to be formed. Generally an infant or child’s brain will have more plasticity than an adults
What are common causes of brain damage
Concussion
Hitting your head
Stroke
Adaptive plasticity after brain injury, Cameron mat case
Had a high risk operation to remove the diseased half of her brain.
After 10 days she was able to walk again
The left side of her brain was able to adapt to the change and start all the functions from the right side
