Clemente—changing for good
Study how people change
Have a model- transtheoretical model
If you get similar about comes form different treatments maybe look at the individual who is making the change. Figure out how these people change their behaviors.
Looked at stages of change as well as processes. Not just ask how they change but also when
Collective or exactive theory-model that brings together different perspectives and tries to show that change happens over time and many of the processes that are identified are ones people can use I daily life.
Same principles apply, going to therapy or on your own
Stages of change
People predictably go through them
1) Precontemplation (people deny they have a problem)
2) Contemplation (admits they have problem, are not trying to change yet)
3) Preparation (developing a plan on how to change, haven’t stopped yet)
4) Action (stop using, but critical period of relapse, in the first 6 months)
5) Maintenance (enter after 6 months of action
Anecdotal* 10 steps for change
1) Precontemplation (we don’t have problem, deny)
2) Contemplation (ok yes we do, but still haven’t changed)
3) Sesire/wanting (yes have problem, but don’t want to change)
4) Self-efficacy* without it people don’t try to change, “I tried but I can’t” ( that I myself can change, that I’m effective)
5) Effort/sacrifice (it’s going to be a sacrifice, it’s not just stop)
6) preparation (a. Know what areas to change)(b. Know how to change ea. area)
8) decision (ok I will go to therapy)
9) action (6 months) (easiest to relapse)
10) maintenance
Motivation? :: I don’t have the motivation, I can’t find it
Will power? :: People think it is just will power
Therapy? :: Therapist in all of the
Encouragement ::: always provide optimism
Effort :: didn’t last long, why? It’s not a matter of will power, it’s a matter of finding a better way.
