Stages of Anesthesia Flashcards
Define Stage I
Beginning of induction of general anesthesia to loss of consciousness
How many planes are in Stage I?
3
Define the the planes of Stage I
Plane 1 - No amnesia or analgesia. Their fine, awake, no pain
Plane 2 - Amnestic but only partially analgesic. volatile/versed/fentanyl; little relaxed - little sedated.
Plane 3 - Complete analgesia and amnesia. Appears to be asleep, induced
Define Stage II
Loss of consciousness to onset of automatic breathing
What do you never do during Stage II?
Intubated
What is occurring during Stage II?
The eyelash reflex disappears. Coughing vomiting, apnea, or moving; the patient may struggle. Move through this stage as fast as possible
How can you help your patient move through Stage II?
Keep environment, quiet, still, and cozy, and don’t touch them
Define Stage III
Onset of automatic respirations to apnea/respiratory paralysis (surgical plane)
How many planes does Stage III have? Define each plane.
It has 4 planes
Plane 1: Automatic respiration to cessation of eyeball movements
Plane 2: Cessation of eyeball movements to the beginning of intercostal muscle paralysis; secretion of tears increase
Plane 3: beginning to completion of intercostal muscle paralysis; pupils dilate; desired plane before muscle relaxants
Plane 4: Complete intercostal paralysis to diaphragmatic paralysis (apnea)
What plane in Stage III is the desired plane?
Plane 3 or 3rd plane
What is the patient telling you in Stage III plane 2 when their tears increase?
They are still a little light in sedation - need more -they are not ready yet.
Define Stage IV?
Stoppage of respirations till death. Medullary depression-respiratory arrest & cardiac death. Don’t want this.
