Stable Management - Stall Fittings Flashcards
Stable characteristics - Zoning
Make sure proposed facility conform to municipal and provincial building and land usage regulations and codes
Stable characteristics - location
Accessibility to roads, driveways, paddocks Drainage/soil type Distance from existing/ future buildings Access to water and electricity Space for corrals, parking, turnout Local climate/wind Area for manure holding and disposal
Stable characteristics - size
Depends on the number of horses to be housed, their intended use and size of:
Corrals
Box stalls and standing stalls
Storage areas for hay, bedding, grain
Area required for manure storage and removal
Possibility of expansion at some future date
Stable characteristics - Appearance of Turnout
Indoor living horses - have a stall and get turned out for daily exercise
Outdoor living horses - require shelter
Stable characteristics - Stalls (box or standing)
Box - Horse is loose;12 ft x12 ft or 10 ft x 10 ft; door at least 4 ft wide and 8 ft high for easy access; open out or slide to avoid disturbing bedding; 2 part door ok to improve ventilation; latches cannot protrude to avoid injuries; 2 bolts best
Standing - horse remains tied; 5-6 ft wide x 12 ft long; allow for more horses, save in labour and bedding; horse unable to look out of stall=bored; access from behind which is dangerous; may not lie down to rest
Both need to be big enough for horse to lie down
Stable characteristics - Heating and Ventilation
Ventilation VIP
Condensation causes determination of building structure
Moisture and foul air contribute to poor animal health
Cooler barn will be drier and promote better health
Winter- balance between airflow to keep barn dry and odour free and heat to prevent water from freezing
Summer- air movement as possible to prevent flies and insects from reproducing in barn
Natural ventilation - windows (cover with wire or bars - prevent horse from breaking the glass)and doors or forced (fans)
Stable characteristics - buckets, feed tubs, hay racks
Install in corners, easily accessible to remove and fill
Bucket, feed tubs (4 ft from floor)
Hay net ring (5 ft from floor)
Free access to salt blocks
Stable characteristics - Water
Constant supply of fresh water
Ensure water pump and water lines are sufficiently insulated to prevent frost build up
3 methods to ensure adequate supply of water:
1. Automatic water bowl
Most labour saving; hard to clean; difficult to monitor amount drunk; must teach horse how to use; if plumbing fails, small flood or horse without water; must keep above freezing
2. Individual water pails
Most labour intensive, must be refilled several times per day; can monitor water intake
3. Water troughs
Stable characteristics - Lighting
Prevents accidents, aids in inspection of horses
Fluorescent lights
Ballasts for cold or damp
Make sure horse cannot make contact with electrical parts by installing wires out of reach
One electrical outlet for every two or three stalls
2 outlets in each feed and tack rooms
All wiring covered with metal tubing to protec from rodents and chewing horses
Stable characteristics - Storage
Amount of space required to store bedding and hay depends on how many horses
