Precautions/Dangers of incorrect bandaging

Damage area if too tight Always clean and dry leg Always wash new bandages Use enough padding Always bandage in or towards the tail Bandages must be changed daily Two fingers between leg and bandage Tape only one turn

Protect from contamination Keeps wounds dressing in place To immobilize an area, allowing tissue to repair Reduce swelling Stop excessive bleeding Support sprains and strains Support sound leg

Thick padding
Stable bandages
Brown paper bag
Masking tape

Firm to add support
Not too tight
Start with padding in splint. One groove inside of leg
Clockwise = right leg
Counter clockwise = left leg
Start from middle of Cotten and continue down leg below fetlock
Even tension, finish at top outside of leg

When soiled or wet No longer functional Swelling above or below bandage Twisted 24 hours have passed
