Stability Flashcards
Positive static stability
After displacement; the object moves back towards the original position
Positive Dynamic stability
Decreasing oscillations that return to the position
What is a stable aircraft?
Resists changes in attitude and attempts to regain original attitude after displacement
What is a manoeuvrable aircraft?
Readily changes attitude with pilot command
The further aft the Centre of Gravity moves, the shorter the arm to the tailplane is and the ……. the destabilising influence becomes.
Stronger
Why do designers ensure COP is behind COG?
To produce a nose-down tendency
What is longitudinal dihedral?
- The tailplane is on the fuselage at a slightly smaller angle of incidence than mainplane
- Nose up the pitch will produce bigger lift on tailplane
Is lateral stability strong or weak?
Weak
What is high wing/ pendulum stability?
Wing on top and weight beneath
Why is dihedral used for lateral stability?
In the event of a wing drop; the aircraft commences a sideslip and it stops the wingdrop
Do floats have a stabilising or destabilising moment?
Destabilising
Do Fin and Rudder have a stabilising or destabilising moment?
Stabilising
What is sweep back used for?
Create stability
What is anhedral used for?
Prevent aircraft from becoming too stable
What is directional stability?
Aligns aircraft’s longitudinal axis with the direction of relative airflow
