ssti Flashcards
What is Localized skin infection?
Localized SSSIs include lesions such as furuncles, carbuncles, and abscesses, which would generally be treated by incision and debridement with drainage
when to call it complicated
Surrounding cellulitis, immunocompromised, or the presence of potentially infectable prostheses, such as cardiac valves, orthopedic devises or vascular grafts, mandates antibiotic use and might well mean that the infection would be classed as complicated
name the part of skin involved in impetigo erysipelus cellulitis fascitis
superficial epideermis
deep epidermis
dermis
sub cut fat
most common organism for the above
for impetigo staph and for the reststrep pyogenes
What sort of skin structure infections are usually caused by staphylococci?
It is often helpful to remember that localized SSSIs above the belt are more likely to be caused by S. aureus than those below the belt, which are more likely to be associated with mixed flora
management of abscess
in case of abscess incision and drainage if possible.no ant5ibiotic coverage required if less than 3 cm abscess.if greaqter than 3 cm abscess then drtain and treat with vancomycin.
how t6o de escalate antibiotic therapy for abscess
de-escalate to oral tmp-smx and cefalexin
if patient has sulpha allergy cotrimoxazole to be replaced by tetracycline or doxycycline
if patient has penicillin allergy clindamycin may be used in place of cephalewxin
linezolid may be used in place of both
treatment of purulent celluliotis
same antibiotic management
