Q

Explain how nationalism, militarism, and the alliance system all combined to lead to the outbreak of World War I.

  1. Explain how the terms connect
  2. Use examples from WWI
A

Nationalism leads to militarism and imperialism because countries need to do both of those things to prove their national power. They also start to create alliances when they see other countries building their empires and militaries. That way if there was a war, they will have protection from other countries.

Examples from the war:
Germany wants to build an empire and acquire territories so it needs to build its military (militarism), that will allow it to overpower other nations.

Serbian nationalists wanted the ability to break away from the empire and have their own nation. This sense of nationalism caused Gavrilo Princip to assassinate the archduke of Austria-Hungary.

Because Austria-Hungary had an alliance with Germany (triple alliance), and Serbia was supported by Russia who was in a different alliance (triple entente). When those nations became involved in a war their allies quickly joined.
