Science (8th) Flashcards
what is a homogeneous mixture?
Look the same throughout and connot be easily seperated.
what is a heterogeneous mixture?
Large particles that can be easily seen/separated throughout
what is a solution
homogeneous mixture of solvent and 1 or more solutes; looks the same throughout.
What’s a colloid?
heterogeneous mixture containing small, undissolved particles that don’t settle out/separate(very small particles, but scatter light)
3 ways to separate a homogeneous mixture
filtration, hot plate(distillation), and evaporation
what are 2 ways to separate a heterogeneous mixture
magnet and filtration
What is found the smallest in the solution?
solute
What does solute dissolve in and has the largest amount.
solvent
How does solutes affect solutions in boiling points?
Raises boiling point.
How does solutes affect solutions in the freezing point
lowers the freezing point.
How does solutes affect solutions in the concentration?
More solute=stronger
Less solute=less dilute
what’s an example of a solution?
Kool-Aid, saltwater, apple juice.
What’s an example of a colloid
milk, fog, shaving cream
what’s an example of a suspension?
oil+vineger, salad dressing, and muddy water.
What 3 things affect solubility?
temp, pressure, property’s of solute a solvent.
what are lost, gained, or shared when a chemical bond is created?
valence electrons
what happens to the bonds between atoms when a chemical change occurs.
bonds break and new bonds form because atoms of elements are rearranged.
what are 5 factors that effect the rate of chemical changes?
surface area, temp, concentration, catalyst, inhibitor
law of conservation mass is a closed or open system?
closed
What is the only thing you can change to balance an equation?
coefficients
what can you never change balancing chemical equations?
Subscript
what are synthetic materials?
chemicals made by humans
