SS Flashcards
Elasticity
the property of a material that enables it to deform when a force is applied to it and to return to its original size and shape when the force is removed.
stress
is an internal resistance to an external force
unit stress
the stress per unit of area of the section and is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI)
strain
is the deformation, or change in size, of a body caused by external loads.
tensile loads - stretch
compressive loads - shorten
unit strain
unit strain = the total strain ( ∆) / the original length (L)
hooke’s law
states that up to a certain unit stress (elastic limit) unit stress (P/A) is directly proportional to unit strain (∆/L)
resolving forces
replace one force with two or more other forces that will produce the same effect on a body as the original force
charpy v-notch test
ductility test where a piece of material has a v-notch cut into the top tests how much energy it takes to make the notch go through the whole piece breaks quickly (little energy) - material is brittle breaks slowly (lots of energy) - material is ductile
