Sporting injuries (define)
any condition which causes a player or athlete to miss a game or training, leave the field of play, or seek medical treatment or first aid
Prevention of injury
Rules of the Game – rules create a safe environment for us to work in.
Correct clothing/equipment
What is a sprain
Wrench or twist of the ligaments, violently causing pain and swelling but not dislocation.
2 types of fractures
In a Simple or Closed fracture the skin is not damaged.
In an Open or Compound fracture the skin is damaged.
What is a fracture
A break or crack in the bone
What is a soft tissue injury
Injuries to the muscles, tendons, ligaments and skin
Signs + symptoms of soft tissue injuries
- Pain
- Swelling
- Restricted movement
Overuse of chronic injuries
If high workloads and low levels of rest are programmed, the athlete can develop an overuse injury
RICER
- Rest
- Ice every 20mins (s.ankle sprain=24hr)(hamstring tear=72hrs)
•Compression (elastic bandage) restricts internal bleeding/swelling
- Elevation (reduce blood flow to injured area, reduce blood loss)
- Referral
