Circulatory/ respiratory System Flashcards
5 function of the Circulatory system
Circulates blood and oxygen around the body
Removes waste products
Controls body temperature
Helps fight against diseases, by circulating white blood cells
The heart, blood and blood vessels work together to service the cells of the body
Function of the chambers:
Ss
Valves:
Allow blood to travel in only one direction
Heart pumps over ……… litres of blood a day
7500L
What is Stroke Volume and the average?
Amount of blood ejected from the LV with each Herat beat
Average = 70ml/beat
What is Cardiac Output and average?
Amount of blood ejected from LV every minute
Measured as SV ✖️HR
Average = 5Litres
Why does heart rate increase as exercise begins
Works harder to supply the muscles with oxygen
Remove waste products (CO2)
Functions of Respiratory system:
Bring air form atmosphere into the lungs
Transfer oxygen into the blood
Remove carbon dioxide from the blood
Allow vocal chords to create speech as air is breathed out
Reduce water vapour + heat
Travel of the air:
Nasal cavity- pharynx- larynx (voice box)- trachea (windpipe)- bronchus- bronchioles- alveoli
Why does breathing rate increase so much during exercise?
Breathing rate becomes faster and deeper to provide the depleted muscles with oxygen
Also more oxygen is required to remove the waste products which exist in the blood
