Spondys Flashcards

1
Q

Cervical radioculopathy (4)

A

Damage or compression of a nerve root as it exits the spinal cord from the cervical region
Degenerative changes of the facet joints and osteophytic formation cause narrowings which pinch the nerve roots
A prolapsed cervical disc can also cause cervical radiculopathy
Symptoms include neck pain, numbness, tingling, pins and needles, pain and weakness in parts of the arm or hand supplied by the nerve root

Q

Cervical spondylosis orthotic objectives (4)

A

To restirct cervical motion, in particular extension lateral flexion and rotation
To hold neck in slight flexion allowing the vertebral foramina to open up and relieve nerve root impingement
Circumferential containment: this will provide warmth, intersegmental motion control and also will aid in reducing inflammation or spasms
Psychological restraint

Q

Cervical spondylosis symptoms (6)

A

Often asymptomatic but in 10-15% is assoc with spinal root or cord compression
Osteophytic formation can result in reduced rom
Neck and shoulder pain, may be chronic or episodic
Suboccipital headache characterised by a deep dull constant throbbing at the base of the occiput
Cervical spondylosis can progress to cevical spondylotic myelopathy
-cervical radiculopathy

Q

Csm definition (5)

A

Most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction/nontraumatic parapesis in older adults
Most common cause is cervical spondylosis
Occurs when there is pressure or damage to the spinal cord
A prolapsed cervical itervertebral disc can cause myelopathy if the prolapse is into the central canal o the vertebra(toward the spinal cord)
Sig affects pts quality of life, can lead to depression and anxiety relating to decreased mobility

Q

Spinal stenosis (2)

A
  • abnormal narrowing of spinal canal that may be either congenital or acquired. Treatment typically surgical to widen spinal canal
  • laminectomy may be indicated surgical procedure to reduce pressure on spinal cord

Q

Spondylolisthesis (3)

A

Forward slippade of a vertebra and the spine above it
In relation to the vertebra below it
Most typically l5 on S1 however l4 on l5 may be observed

Q

Spondylolysis (3)

A

Pars interarticularis is found in post portion of vertebra
Spondylolysis occurs when there is a fracture of the pars portion of vertebra
Spondyloisthesis occurs qhen the vertebra shifts forward due to instability from the pars defect (not always in pars defect)
