Splinting Flashcards
1
Q
Why are hand and wrist splints required?
A
To rest or immobilise structures of the hand
2
Q
Describe the POSI Position of Safe Immobilisation
A
- For structures to heal (eg bone fractures)
- For swollen tissues to be held to avoid further irritation
- All structures to remain in position of function
- 25 degree wrist extension
3
Q
What does the position of safe immobilisation mean?
A
Collateral ligaments of MCP and IP joints are in their most lengthened position and they cannot shorten (which will limit ROM)
4
Q
When making a splint for a client with Rheumatoid Arthritis, should the hand be in resting or position of safe immobilisation? Describe why?
A
Resting position
- For muscles to rest and any swollen structures to reduce friction through motion
- MCP and IP flexion
- Take splint on and off comfortably
5
Q
What position should the wrist, thumb and fingers be in the splint
A
Wrist extension: 10-20 deg
MCP flexion: 20-45 deg
IP flexion: 10-30 deg
Thumb flexion
