Activities oriented toward taking care of ones one survival and wellbeing
- Bathing
- Grooming
- Toileting
- Dressing
What are instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs)?
- Support daily life within home and community that often require more complex interactions than ADLs
- Health management
- Driving/community mobility
- Meal preparation and cleanup
- Shopping
Why do OT’s assess self care?
- To describe self-care status
- Measure change and monitor progress
- Facilitate communication and decision making
- Evaluate programs and conduct research
What is considered when assessing self care?
- Clients needs, interests, perceived difficulties
- Define nature and meaning of activity for client
- Identify physical/social features that affect assessment
- Possible causes for OP deficits
- Differences in observations compared to what client has reported
How do you prepare for a self-care assessment?
- Collect everything needed for the assessment and set up environment
- Schedule assessment with client and relevant staff
- Sensitive to person’s needs for modesty and privacy
- Include relevant others (eg: carer, family)
What is a non-standardised assessment?
Therapist decides on structure and way assessment is conducted
-Eg: interview, direct observation of client
What is a standardised assessment?
Standard procedures/specific norms OT has to follow
What are the considerations the OT has to follow when conducting a standardised test?
- Cultural bias of instrument
- Time to conduct
- Physical, cognitive, behavioural focus
- Ability vs capability
How does an OT select the intervention strategy to use?
- Client’s ability to learn
- Client’s prognosis
- Time allocated for intervention
- Discharge plan and their environment when discharged
- Client’s ability to follow through with new routines and techniques
