What is the gastrosplenic ligament?
Part of the greater omentum located anterior to the splenic hilum - connects spleen to greater curvature of stomach
What is the Splenorenal ligament?
Part of the greater omentum located posteriorly to the splenic hilum.
Splenic vessels and tail of pancreas lie within this ligament.
What structures lie anterior to the spleen?
Stomach
What structures lie posterior to the spleen?
Diaphragm
Left lung
Ribs 9-11
What structures lie inferior to the spleen?
Left splenic flexure (colon)
What structures lie medially to the spleen?
Left kidney
Tail of pancreas
What blood vessels supply the spleen?
Splenic artery (branch of Coeliac Trunk) - branches into 5 arteries supplying different sections of the spleen
What is the venous drainage from the spleen?
Splenic vein - combines with superior mesenteric vein to form the hepatic portal vein
What is the nerve innervation to the spleen?
Coeliac plexus
What is the lymph drainage of the spleen?
Drain into pancreaticosplenic lymph nodes and then coeliac nodes
What is the surface anatomy of the spleen?
Sits on L posterior abdominal wall in relation to ribs 9-11 (or 10-12 in some people)
Is the spleen intraperitoneal or retroperitoneal?
Intraperitoneal
What is the embryological origin of the spleen?
Mesenchymal
Towards which region does the spleen enlarge?
Right Iliac Fossa (or RLQ)
What is the function of the spleen?
Filtering of old RBCs
Storage of platelets and WBCs (immune response)
