SPIROMETRY Flashcards
How to do the spiro test?
- Add/Select data
- Put in all data
- Save abd Exit
- Ask Px to take a deep breath in
- hold nose closed
- Put mouth piece in
- Press start
- Encurage Px to blow out as hard as possible
- When graoh meets midline tell Px to take a big breath in
What does the top half of the graph show?
Expiration
What does the bottom half of the graph show?
Inspiration
What do we call the full graph?
Flow Volume loop
What does spirometry test?
Lung function of a Px
Contraindications to test
-unstable CV status
-Recent eye/thoracic/abdominal surgery
-nausea/vomitting
FEV1?
Forced Expiratory Volume in 1sec.
Amount of air exhaled in 1st second under forced after maximal inhalation
FEV1 and FVC NORMs
> 80% (MORE THAN)
FVC?
Forced Vital Capacity
Total amount of air that can be exhaled during maximal forced expiration effort
FEV1/FVC RATIO
% of FVC expired in 1 sec
FEV1/FVC NORM
> 70%(MORE THAN)
TLC
Total Lung capacity
Amount of air in lungs at maximal inhalation
FRC
Functional Residual Capacity
Amount of air in lungs at resting end-expiration
RV
Residual Volume
Amount of air remaining in lungs after maximal exhalation
What is restrictive lung disease?
Struggle taking air into lungs
Resulting in
Decreased lung volume
Examples of restrictive lung disease
Scoliosis
Muscle dystrophy
How can we see restrictive lung disease on the graph
Decreased
TLC
FVC
Normal
FEV1/FVC ratio
What is obstructive disorders?
Diseases that cause blockages in airways
Decreased exhalation
Examples of obstructive disorders
Asthma
COPD
How can we see Obstructive disorders in the graph
Decreased FEV1/FVC ratio
