What is Body Mass Index?
Using Height and Weight to determine whether a Px is obese, overweight, underweight and we can use it as an indicator for CVD and Type 2 diabetes
Problem with BMI
It does not account for the composition of body weight. So does not take muscle mass into account.
How to calculate BMI?
Body weight ÷ (heightxheight)
Norms for BMI
Normal 18.5-24.9
Obese >30
How many times is the skinfold taken?
3 times in rotational order on the right side holding for 2 seconds
What are the sites for skinfold taking?
- Triceps-Verical halfway btw acromion and olecranon processes on posterior midline
- Subscapular-diagnal 2cm below inferior angle of scapula
- Suprailiac-diagnal above iliac crest inline with mid-axillary line
- Abdominal-vertical 2cm to right if umbilicus
Px SITS DOWN - Thigh-vertical on midline of thigh midway btw proximal border of oatella and inguinal crease of hip
- Calf-vertical medial side at maximal circumference of calf

18-22% Women
8-12% Men
What fat is measured by Skin fold?
Subcutaneous far
Where is Waist circumference taken?
Narrowesr part of trunk btw ribs and iliac crest
Where is Hip circumference taken?
Maximal extension of backside

Women <88cm
Men <102cm

Asses body fat distribution patterns
WTH ratio norms
