Spirometer Flashcards
What does a spirometer measure?
The volume of air inhaled and exhaled.
What is vital capacity?
The maximum volume of air an individual can inhale and exhale in a deep breath.
What is tidal volume?
The air inhaled (peaks) and exhaled (throughs) when at rest.
What is residual volume?
The volume of air that always remains in the lungs so they don’t collapse.
What is breathing rate and how can it be calculated?
= the umber of breaths taken per minute.
Calculated by counting how many full peaks (breaths) per minute.
What is ventilation rate and how can it be calculated?
This is the volume of air inhaled per minute using:
Ventilation rate=tidal volume x breahting rate
How are oxygen uptake and ventilation rate related?
Oxygen uptake will increase when the ventilation rate increases. e.g. during exercise.
