What is the difference btwn Religion vs. Spirituality?
Religion- set of beliefs & practices that a community shares in its pursuit of a relationship with God
Spirituality- a broader concept, the recognition of a dimension that is invisible, yet within us and beyond the world that provides a sense of connectedness to the universe.
- Beliefs about reality and the way things are that help individuals kinda to make sense of life
What is the similarity of religion and spirituality?
Both are searching for the meaning of life
Can one be spiritual but not religious?
YES!! Everyone IS spiritual (holistic), NOT necessary religious!!!
What are the 5 Universal Spiritual needs?
- Meaning and Purpose in Life - making sense of the world we live in and bring control when chaos is present
- Faith or trust in someone or something beyond ourselves - deep conviction of things not seen
- Hope
- Love - makes one feel valued
- Forgiveness - Has power to restore broken relationship, connection btwn forgiveness & physical and emotional health

What is S-P-I-R-I-T Acronym?
S- Senses: use ur sense to gather data about your patient’s beliefs, practices and needs
P- Presence: be present and available
I- Intuition: listen
R- Respect: respect their spiritual beliefs by being non-judgmental
I- Interpretation: accurately interpret data you have collected. Validate your assessment with patient or family
T- Trust: develop a trusting relationship

Attitudes, values, beliefs, customs shared by a group fo people and passed down generation to generation

- No blood or blood products –> they won’t take blood transfusions
- Jewish

- If Orthodox, they’ll not press call light or turn on/off lights on Sabbath
