What are the causes of Hypokalemia?
A
- Loop diuretics: Lasix and Bumex
- Severe diarrhea
- ALCOHOL abuse
- CHF/HTN (Hypertension)

What are the S/S of Hypokalemia?
A
- Weakness, flaccid
- Decreased in DTR
- Leg cramping
- U waves on ECG
- PVC on ECG, heart palpitations
- Decreased Bowel sound, constipation

What are the Treatments of Hypokalemia?
A
- Food high in K+
- Oral and parenteral K+
- Pedialyte
- Sports drink

What are the nursing interventions for hypokalemia?
A
- Monitor electrolytes
- monitor vs
- monitor cardiac rhythm
- DILUTE K+ PO OR IV!!!

What are the causes of Hyperkalemia?
A
- Dehydration
- K+ sparring diuretics
- Renal failure
- Acidosis
- Tissue damage - burns!
- Salt substitutes

What are the s/s of Hyperkalemia?
A
- Heart conduction abnormalities
- Decreased DTR
- Muscle twitching
- Increased BS, diarrhea
- CARDIAC ARREST!
- (HIGH T wave on ECG)

What are the treatments for Hyperkalemia?
A
- Kayexalete
- Insulin (moves k+ to the cell)
- D50 (prevents hypoglycemia)
- Sodium Bicarbonate
- Diuretics!
