SPINE CLINICAL Flashcards
Intermediolateral (sympathetic) cell column
T1-L2
Sacral autonomic (parasympathetic) neurons
S2-S4
lamination of nerve fibers in the spinothalamic tract
(sacral fibers lateral, cervical fibers medial),
Dorsal Root Signs
diminution or loss of all sensory modalities (anesthesia) ipsilateral and in dermatomes supplied by the involved dorsal root(s)
with bilateral diminution or loss of pain and temperature (sensory modalities that cross in the anterior white commissure) s
Anterior White Commissure Signs
spared in ALS
brain stem controlling eye movements and sacral neurons controlling sphincter function
Lesions in or around the central canal will encroach initially on the fibers conveying pain and temperature in the anterior white commissure
Syringomyelia
early sphincter dysfunction, urinary incontinence, loss of voluntary emptying of the bladder, increased residual urine volume, and absent sensation of the urge to urinate. . Symmetric loss of sacral sensations (saddle anesthesia) along the distribution of S-2 to S-4 dermatomes is found.
Conus Medullaris Syndrome
there is early occurrence of radicular pain in dermatomes supplied by the affected roots.Lower motor neuron–type paresis or paralysis occurs in muscles supplied by the affected nerves
Cauda Equina Syndrome
early sphincter disturbance and symmetric loss of sacral sensations. Pain is unusual
Conus Medullaris Syndrome
