Spine (Bones, joints, and Characteristics) Flashcards
Body of vertebrae
Weight bearing surface
Vertebral arch
Composed of the pedicles and the laminae
Vertebral foramen
Space created by the body and vertebral arch
Vertebral canal
Contains the spinal cord and its coverings; it is created by successive vertebral foramina
Spinous process
Extension posterior from the meeting of the lamina
Transverse process
Lateral projection originating at the junction of the lamina and pedicle
Superior articular process
2 superior projections from the superior portion of the lamina to form the synovial joints (ZPJ) with the vertebra directly above
Inferior articular process
2 inferior projections from thr inferior portion of the lamina to form the synovial joints (ZPJ) with the vertebra directly below
Inferior vertebral notch
Indentation of the inferior edge of the pedicle
Superior vertebral notch
Indentation of the superior edge of the pedicle
Intervertebral foramen
Space created by the superior vertebral notch of the vertebra adjacent to the inferior vertebral notch of the above vertebra. Spinal nerves are transmitted through these foramen.
Characteristic of Cervical spinous processes
Bifid
Foramina transversaria
Vertebral artery passes through the foramina in the transverse processes
Characteristics of the C1 vertebra
Atlas No spinous process No body Articulates with the occipital condyles Rotates on the axis
Characteristics of the C2 vertebra
Axis
Dens - projects superior, for the rotation of the atlas
