First layer of skin
Epidermis; superficial layer; provides protection; Langerhan’s Cells signal immune system; stratified squamous epithelium.
Second layer of skin
Dermis; strength and toughness of skin; skin tone; supplied by arteries and they form a cutaneous plexus; supplied by afferent nerve endings that are sensitive to, touch, temperature, and pain.
Third layer of skin
Subcutaneous tissue; composed of loose connective tissue and stored fat; contains sweat glands, superficial blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and cutaneous nerves.
Fourth layer of skin
Deep fascia; dense connective tissue that surrounds all structures, muscles, blood vessels, bone; forms compartments; compartmentalization allows for greater vascular pressure on venous system.
