Frontal Plane

A

sidebend ~5 o degree each direction

Side bend RIGHT
* occiput translates LEFT (but shape of condyle prevents pure translation such that with right SB, the right OA goes into some ext

[ie, right condyle moves into an anterior position] and the left OA into some flexion [ie, the left condyle moves posteriorly]

*Also accompanied by some rotation to LEFT of C1 on C2 and accompanied by right rotation of C2 on C3

Transverse Plane

A

rotation 35 degrees - 40 degrees each direction
Arch of C1 pivots around on dens of C2

Superior facet of Axis (C2) are biconvex

Inferior facet of Atlas (C1) are slightly concave

during rotation to right, the left inf facet of C1 slides ant and downward on sup facet of C2; the right inf facet of C1 slides post and downward on the sup facet of C2

Q

C0-C2 Coupled Motion
Contralateral coupling
Frontal Plane

A

Side bending of head to right is accompanied by:
* Translation of C1 to LEFT

  • Rotation to LEFT of C1 on C2
  • Rotation to RIGHT of C2 on C3
  • All of this allows for an overall effect of side bending RIGHT and rotating LEFT of the upper cervical spine – Contralateral coupling

Sidebend

(25-30 dg each direction)

Mixed coupling; inconsistent evidence (Sizer 2007)

With right lateral flexion, the inferior facet of the superior segment glides inferiorly on the concave side of lateral flexion (right side) and the inferior facet of the superior segment glides superiorly on the convex side of the lateral flexion (left side)

Flexion/Extension

(45-55 deg flexion; 15-25 deg ext)

With flexion: Inf facet of level above glides anteriorly and superiorly on superior facet of level below

With extension: Inf facet of level above glides posteriorly and inferiorly on superior facet of level below

A

Rotation

(5-7 deg each direction)

Arthrokinematics
Same as thoracic spine

With rotation to LEFT,
RIGHT inf facet of level above approximates the superior facet of level below, and LEFT inf facet of level above gaps (moves away from) superior facet of level below

18
Q

Lumbar region
Frontal Plane

A

Sidebend

(20 deg each direction)

Arthrokinematics Similar to thoracic spine
