Spinal Segments Flashcards
How may segments are there in the spinal cord
31 segments (8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, 1 coccygeal)
Every segment receives dorsal and ventral root filaments EXCEPT
1 cervical and coccygeal segment
Largest spinal cord segment
Cervical segments
2 major pathways of the dorsal funiculus found on each side
Fasciculus gracilis and fasciculus cuneatus
IML is present in all of these segments and contains preganglionic SYMPATHETIC neurons. Also contains dorsal nucleus of Clarke
Thoracic segments
Rostral levels of thoracic cord
T1-T6
Caudal levels of thoracic cord
T7-T12
What dorsal funiculus pathways are found in rostral thoracic segments
Both (gracilis, cuneatus)
What dorsal funiculus is found at caudal segments of thoracic cord
Only gracilis
Spinal nerves emerging from rostral thoracic cord (EXCEPT T1) innervate
Axial muscles (back and intercostal muscles)
Spinal nerves emerging from caudal thoracic levels innervate
Axial muscles and abdominal muscles
Lumbar segments that contain IML and sympathetic preganglionic neurons
L1-L2
Lumbar segments that do not contain IML
L3-L5
Sacral segments that contain IML with PARASYMPATHETIC preganglionic neurons
S2-S4
Area of skin supplied by right and left dorsal roots of a single spinal segment
Dermatome
