Spinal nerves Flashcards
What is the cauda equina?
The continuation of spinal nerves after the lumbar region of the spinal cord
What forms the spinal root?
Dorsal and ventral roots combining
What are sensory neurons?
Neurons that carry impulses from receptor cells to CNS via dorsal root
What are motor neurons?
Neurons that carry impulses from the CNS to effectors via ventral root
Where do spinal nerves exit the spinal cord?
Intervertebral foramina
Can one spinal nerve be associated with more than one myotome/dermatome?
NO
What are the 4 types of spinal nerves?
- Somatic motor
- Somatic sensory
- Visceral sensory
- Visceral motor
What do somatic motor neurons do?
Motor to skeletal muslces
What do somatic sensory neurons do?
Sensory from general cutaneous receptors and proprioceptors of skeletal muscles, tendons, joints, vision, and hearing
What do visceral motor neurons do?
motor to smooth muscle, cardiac muscles, and glands
What do visceral sensory neurons do?
Sensory from receptors in viscera
