Spinal Cord Structure Flashcards
What does the anterior horn consist of?
Efferent (motor) neurons
What is the spinal cord?
8 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 sacral A few coccygeal
Alpha motor neurons affect?
Muscles
Gamma motor neurons effect?
Muscle spindles
What does the posterior horn consist of?
Afferent (sensory) neurons
What is the dorsal/medial lemniscal system for?
Convey sensations of proprioception, vibration and tactile discrimination
What are the Spinothalamic tracts for?
Convey sensations of pain and temperature
What are the spinoff rebelled tracts for?
Convey proprioception info from muscle spindles, Golgi tendons organs, touch and pressure receptors to cerebellum for voluntary muscle control.
What are the spinoreticular tracts for?
To convey deep and chronic pain to reticular formation of brain stem
What is the autonomic nervous system?
What are the two divisions?
Concerns with innervate one of involuntary structures: smooth muscle, heart, glands; helps maintain homeostasis.
Sympathetic and parasympathetic.
What is the sympathetic division of the ANS responsible for?
(Thoracolumbar) Fight or flight, emergency responses, raises harts rate and BP, constricts peripheral blood vessels and redistributes blood.
What is the parasympathetic division of the ANS for?
(Craniosacral) Conserves and restores homeostasis, slows heart rate and reduces BP, increases peristalsis.
