Neurons Flashcards
What are nuclei?
Compact groups of nerved cell bodies
ganglia in CNS
What is the structure of a neuron?
Explain them.
Cell bodies: receive info
Axons: impulses away from cell
Synapses: communication between cells
What do projection neurons do?
Carry impulses to other parts of CNS
What are interneurons?
Short relay neurons
What are axon bundles called? In SC?
Tracts/fasiculi
Columns/funiculi
What are neuroglia?
Support cells that do not transmit signals
What are nodes of Ranvier?
Small gaps on neuron where myelin is absent
What is myelins function?
To increase speed of conduction and conserve energy
What are the three fiber types? Explain them.
A fibers Alpha-proprioception Beta-touch/pressure Gamma-motor to muscle spindles Delta-pain, temp and touch B fibers- small, conduct less rapidly C fibers- smallest, slowest conducting
LMN lesion symptoms?
Flaccidity, decreased or absent deep tendon reflexes, atrophy
UMN lesion symptoms?
Increased deep tendon reflexes, spasticity, clonus, emergence of primitive reflexes including Babinski sign, exaggerated cutaneous reflexes, autonomic dysreflexia
