Spinal cord and Spinal Nerves Flashcards
What part of the spine is the spinal cord located?
Vertebral canal (individual vertebral foramen)
The spinal cord has a meninges consisting of what three layers?
Pia mater (inner)
Arachnoid mater (middle)
Dura mater (outer)
What are the two enlargements in the spinal cord?
Cervical enlargement
Lumbar enlargement
What are the three horns of grey matter?
Anterior(ventral) horn
Lateral horn
Posterior(dorsal) horn
What is the difference between the Posterior(dorsal) root and the Anterior(ventral) root?
Posterior(dorsal) root contain sensory neurons and transmit sensory nerve impulses to CNS
Anterior root contains motor neurons and transmit motor nerve impulses from CNS
Name and explain the origin of the coverings in a spinal nerve
Endoneurium - connective tissue surrounding individual neuron axons
Perineurium - connective tissue surrounding fascicles(bundle of axons) in a nerve
Epineurium - superficial connective tissue surrounding an entire nerve (covering the myelin sheath)
