spermatogenisis Flashcards
1
Q
What is spermatogenis?
A
Production of spermatozoa
2
Q
Where does spermatogenesis occur?
A
seminiferous tubules
3
Q
What are the three phases spermatogenesis is split into?
A
- spermatocytogenesis (proliferation)
-meiosis
-spermiogenesis (differentation)
4
Q
What occurs in spermatogenesis (phase 1) ?
A
- spermatogonia (stem cells) undergo mitotic divisions
- spermatogonia split into types (A/I/B)
- generates primary spermatocytes
- Stallion performs this 8 times = 256
5
Q
What occurs at the meiosis stage (phase 2)?
A
- spermatocytes undergo meiosis 1 into secondary spermatocytes then undergo meiosis 2 to transfer into spermatids
-secondary spermatocytes = short lived
-primary spermatocytes = longest lived germ cell
6
Q
What occurs at the spermiogenesis (phase 3)?
A
- differenation occurs
- spermatid forms the acrosome, flagellum and microcondrial helix
7
Q
What is semination?
A
release of spermatoza from sertoli cells
8
Q
What is the structure of a sperm cell?
A
- Head ( nucleus)
- Acrosome (top of the head)(hydolytic enzymes)
- post nucular cap/postacorsomal region
- Mid piece of tail (mitochondia)
- principle peice
-end piece of tail - through tail (corse fibres and microtubules)
9
Q
What are the three stages of sperm deposition?
A
- erection
- emmission (sperm through vas deferens/ mix with seminal plasma/ now semen)
- ejaculation
10
Q
What is pre sperm?
A
Lunbricates and cleans area
11
Q
What is post sperm and sperm rich fractions?
A
sperm rich is the deposition of the most sperm
post sperm is the gel fraction seen in species such as the stallion
