Lactation Flashcards
What is the anatomy of the mammary gland?
lobules -clusters of avioli encapsulated by connective tissue sheath
lobe- groups of lobules
ducts - interlobular ducts join together forming a gland cistern
What are alveoli?
sack like structures - milk is sinthasied here
How can mammary glands develop?
isometric = constant with body growth (2-3 months/ after puberty)
allometric = faster than body growth (2-3 months)
What happens to the mammary glands during pregnancy?
- extensive development of lobulo-aveolar system
-controlled by progestrone/oestrogen/placental lactogen
What is lactogenisis?
secreatory cells are starting to be activated
What are the stages of lactogenisis?
STAGE 1
- enzymes produced
- substrates gatherd
- occurs in the last two months of pregnancy
STAGE 2
- milk secretion from alvioli
What triggers lactogenisis?
- cortisol inside of foetus stimulates prostogladin converting into progestrone or oestrodiol
What occurs at milk let down?
-suckling removes milk in teat cistern
-neuroendocrine control
-hypothalamus releases more oxytocin to stimulate milk production
Why does milk let down occur during labour?
- oxytocin levels
How is milk let down inhibited?
- adrenaline causes vasoconstriction reducing the flow of oxytocin
