Male Reproductive Anatomy Flashcards
What is the structure of the testies?
scrotum
Vas defenrens
pampiniform plexus
eppiddymus
rete testis
lobules
tunica albuginea
testies
gametonic and endocrine finction
penis
iguinal canal
When do the testis descend?
late gestation
What is it called when the testis do not descend?
cryptorchid/rig
what is the purpose of sertoli cells in the testis?
- support developing spermatoza
-protection
What is the structure and purpose of the eppididymis?
- highly convoluted tube with a folded lining of ciliated cells
-Where spermatozoa undergo final maturation - head of e = fluid reabsorption
- body of e = maturation of spermatozoa
- tail of e = storage
What is the structure and purpose of the vas deferens?
- thick muscular wall (three layers) with folded epithelial lining
-push seamen towards the penis - transport from the eppidyms to the urethra
What is the structure and purpose of the iguinal canal?
- where the vas deferens exit towards the penis
- vascular network and heat exchange occurs
-cremaster muscle controls temperature
What temperature are the testis kept at?
4-6 degrees cooler than body tempreture
What is the pampiform plexus?
- testicular veins that countercurrent heat exchange
What do the accessory glands produce?
- seminal plasma
- used for transportation/ energy and protection
What are the male reproductive accessory glands?
-ampulla (paired) - enlargement of vas deferens
-Prostate - close to bladder and pelvic urethra junction
-bulboural ureathral glands (paired) -near ischial arch
What are the three sections of the penis?
-root
-body
-glans
How does erectile tissue differ in species
- heamodynamic fibroelastic (bull/boar/ram) - little erectile tissue/ sigmoid flexture
- musculocarvenous heamodynamic (dog/stallion/tom) - large proportion of erectile tissue
What is the purpose of the glans of the penis?
-urethral orifice
-morphological differences between species
-protected by a sheath
