Spermatogenisis Flashcards
When does spermatogenisis occur?
Sexual maturity
How do spermatogonia increase in number?
Mitosis
How many chromosomes do spermatogonia have?
46
Spermatocytes divide via what?
Meiosis
What does meiosis create?
4 sperm cells with unique sets of genes
How many chromosomes are left after meiosis?
23
Sperm anatomy components
Head
Midpiece
Tail/ flagellum
What’s in the head of sperm?
Nucleus
Acrosome with enzymes to penetrate oocyte outer protective layer
Midpiece of sperm
Contains mitochondria for energy for tail
Flagillum
Provides mobility
What does LH do in spermatogenisis?
Targets interstitial endocrine cells which release testosterone
Increased levels of testosterone does what in spermatogensis?
Turns off GnRH and APG hormones
Spermatocytes undergo spermatogenisis
What does FSH do in males?
Target sustenocytes which release APB and Inhibin
What does APB do in spermatogenisis?
Keeps testosterone high for spermatogenisis
What does inhibin do in spermatogenisis?
Turns off GnRH and APG hormones when sperm count gets high
