Spermatogenesis, Oogenesis And Fertilisation Flashcards
What is spermatogenesis?
Process of the which sperm cell production occurs
Takes place in the semiferous tubules located in the testes
What is spermiogenesis?
Process by which haploid round spermatids complete a series of events to become sperm cells with head, neck, middle piece and tail - into motile sperms
What is the structure of spermatozoa and functions?
Head - acrosome - has a nucleus so contains DNA
Mid piece (body) - packed with mitochondria to fuel propelling actions
Tail - axial filament
What is oogenesis?
Production or development of an ovum
What is the process of fertilisation?
Sperm and egg unite in 1 Fallopian tube to form a zygote
Zygote travels down Fallopian tube where is becomes a morula
Once it reaches uterus it becomes a blastocyst
Blastocyst burrows into uterine lining - implantation
What are the 3 processes undertaken to ensure implantation?
1 - blastocyst contacts the implantation site of endometrium
2 - trophoblast cells of the blastocyst attach to endometrial epithelium
3 - invasive trophoblast cells cross the endometrial epithelial membrane and then invade endometrial stroma
