when and what is the vegetative stage?
at 0-4 months the child makes sounds of discomfort linked to their physical needs
when and what is the cooing stage?
at 4-7 months the child makes sounds of comfort as well as vocal play using open mouthed sounds
when and what is the babbling stage?
at 6-12 months the child uses repeated patterns of vowel and consonant sounds
e.g. baba, mama, dada
when and what is the proto-word stage?
at 9-12 months the child makes particular sounds that have meaning
(mmm - give me that)
when and what is the holophrastic/ one- word stage?
at 12-18 months a child says one word utterances
when and what is the two-word stage?
at 18-24 months the child uses two word phrases or combinations (simple sentences)
when and what is the telegraphic stage?
at 24-36 months the child uses three or more words combined (complex sentences - i’m going to the park)
when and what is the post-telegraphic stage?
at 36+ months the child uses more grammatically complex language.
