A

A

Vibrations of the vocal cords (different vowels are produced by different size and shape of the oral comity) -voicing

A

constriction of the vocal tract - each consonant is produced by a unique pattern of articulation

What are the problems posed by speech as a perceptual stimulus?

A

1) The segregation problem- where are the word boundaries?
2) Variability problems- How do we perceive the same phonemes despite the difference in speaker &/or context (eg talking to a baby and coarticulation -variability due to context)
