Speech Perception Flashcards
what are the basic elements of speech?
Phonemes
What are phonemes?
if changed the word would change the meaning of a word (kit, cat, cut, etc)
How are vowels produced?
Vibrations of the vocal cords (different vowels are produced by different size and shape of the oral comity) -voicing
How are consonants produced?
constriction of the vocal tract - each consonant is produced by a unique pattern of articulation
What are the problems posed by speech as a perceptual stimulus?
1) The segregation problem- where are the word boundaries?
2) Variability problems- How do we perceive the same phonemes despite the difference in speaker &/or context (eg talking to a baby and coarticulation -variability due to context)
What is the McGurk Effect?
“Audiovisual Speech Perception”
-Visual info can influence the speech sound we hear
What is Wernicke’s aphasia?
Impaired speech perception intact production
What is boroa’s aphasia?
Impaired speech production, intact speech perception
