Spectroscopy Flashcards
What are the 5 stages of mass spectroscopy?
Vapourise Ionisation Acceleration Deflection Detection
What are the 2 uses of infrared spectroscopy?
Breathalysers
Monitoring pollutant gases
How is infrared used in breathalysers?
Detect ethanol in breath samples
More infrared absorbed, more ethanol in breath
How is infrared used in monitoring pollutant gases?
Remote sensors analyse the infrared spectra of vehicle emissions.
Detects CO, CO2 and hydrocarbons in busy town centres and by motorways
What are the 3 main greenhouse gases?
CO2
CH4
H2O
What increases the greenhouse effect?
Amount of gas (Conc/mol)
Amount of infrared it can absorb
What happens to bonds in molecules when infrared is added?
They vibrate more (gained energy)
What happens to linear molecules when infrared is added?
Bonds temporarily get longer then shorter
What happens to non linear molecules when infrared is added?
Bond angle temporarily increases then decreases
What affects how much a bond vibrates?
Heavier atoms vibrate less
The stronger the bond the less it vibrates
What sentence do you always say in infrared spectroscopy?
There is an absorption at ___ cm^-1 therefore, there is a ___ bond
